Boxing Day

Firstly, thank you for the invite to the site Una, it's great to see a tribute up and I'll try my best to contribute. I have many stories I could tell, of many miniature adventures and generally daft things we generally did over the years. However, for some reason, this story sticks out in my head, and to be honest, it's not really that much of an exciting story, just one of a great day, with some great friends. I must have been about 12 or 13, making Mark 14 or 15. And as the title suggests, the day was boxing day, of which year I can't precisely remember. The day sticks out in my head because we did something different to the usual bit of running around and then playing computer games. We went on a little adventure! I remember it was only Mark, Dan(beaver) and I because everyone else was busy with their families, presents or general holiday stuff, but we had the whole day free and we were bored! So off we went, to the other side of Holywell. It was a cold icy day and we trampled our way through dozens of fields going up towards Brynford, for no other reason, than to see what was on the other side of them...and to see Dan be afraid of the 'bulls' in them, always an added bonus. At the time I wasn't allowed out far and town was considered quite a big deal, so I was breaking all the rules by coming out this way which made the day more fun! I'm sure Mark would have been actually allowed though, and I'm quite sure he was probably the one pushing me to stop being so uptight! The bit I'll always remember is coming out on the top of Pen-Y-Ball hill after quite literally having to crawl under some overgrown hedges, and here we found a Tire. Just on the side of the road, lying there...innocently. So obviously we started to play with it, pushing it down the hill a little bit and then stopping it. Until Mark came in... and if you know how steep pen-y-ball hill is I hope this will raise a smile. He starts pushing the tire (which is about 4/5ft in diameter by the way) with all his strength down the hill so it will gain 'momentum', and that it did! It started rolling so fast that we couldn't keep up with it to try and stop or slow down the tire. And it hurtled around the corner out of sight presumably still going down the hill. Instinctively all 3 of us turned around and scarpered STRAIGHT back up the hill and ran for a good 2 minutes to the top, bricking ourselves over the fact that this tire could very well have hit a car or gone into the busy road down below. After the initial horror we spent a good time laughing at how stupid we were to push this massive tire down such a steep hill and we also spent a good amount of time finding a detour route back home due to us being afraid of passing anywhere near where the tire could have collided (well me and Dan being afraid). That night when I finally arrived home, I was late for tea, covered in mud, starving and thirsty, But I was beaming, everyday should have been like that I wished. I'm now sitting here seriously struggling to remember what I actually did on Christmas day that year. Out of all the new 'toys' I had and all the other good things about Christmas, It turned out that you cannot enjoy anything more than a good day out with friends. (P.S. – Never did find out if that tire actually hit anything..I’d like to presume it was a ‘no’)
